" The Night Watch" by Rembrandt https://smarthistory.org/rembrandt-the-night-watch/
This Painting is known as " the Night Watch created by Rembrandt, in 1642. This is an oil on canvas and is currently held within the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Considering the name of this painting and the overall intent or original content this painting is very dark on the outside having the audience believe that is is obviously night time. It also uses bight colors towards the center to catch the eye of the beholder to have the center of the painting being the most important part. This painting has a lot of motion and action happening in it. this is painting of a battalion or brigade of Guards for the city. these so called guards would basically act as police of the city and would protect the streets the people and the boundaries of the city. They would train and practice with many of the modern weapons for that time in history. Using the certain colors you can see that the commander was in the middle of the painting almost giving direction or information to the man standing next to him. with the darker colors being used on the outside of the painting you are still able to tell the actions of the surrounding men that create action but also from the young woman who is bight and vivid enough to draw attention to her that makes you see the innocence and the protection of the townspeople that the guards protect. I found this painting very interesting and would have definitely given this painting a classic frame and held it at very high esteem. This painting gives a very unified and portrayal to the times and how cities were able to keep themselves safe and yet police themselves so in order to conduct and keep the peace for its own people.

So, I have no idea if the man in gold is supposed to be a specific person, or a representation of the Night Watch itself, but the fact that he is in gold is very interesting to me. Personally, I think the girl in gold resembles an angel. Perhaps by placing both her and the man in matching gold tones amongst all the darkness, Rembrandt is making a statement about the man being the "guardian angel" of the Watch. Do you think this painting is a reference to a specific event or person, or it is just a painting depicting the Night Watch?
